Brett Henrikson is an artist, photographer, and educator who specializes in large format and experimental photo processes. They primarily create artwork incorporating traditional analog darkroom techniques like antique and alternative processes. Their current project revolves around experiencing grief through finding a cosmic balance in the landscape.
Brett received their BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Their career focuses on education and community engagement, they have consistently been working with students in art and photography education for the past 15 years. Brett has experience teaching in continuing education and high school art programs, including working with youth in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Brett also taught the pre-college darkroom classes at RISD before moving to New York.
Currently, Brett is the Senior Systems Admin in the BFA Photography department at the School of Visual Arts. Their favorite part of the job is helping students overcome technical and conceptual challenges. Before the pandemic, Brett showed their work extensively, including highlights like Untitled Art Fair SF, Soho Photo, The Vermont Center for Photography, The Far East Museum, and The Griffin Museum of Photography. They have also curated and juried shows, including “Mirror with a Memory” an alternative process photo show, and “Naked” an inclusive show on the body. Since the pandemic, Brett’s primary focus is on creating a sustainable art practice that nourishes their creative spirit over all else.
